Tesla Roadster 2026: 7 Key Features, Price, Top Speed and Launch Date

A first look based on published reports. Last updated: 16 October 2026.

The Tesla Roadster is finally back. Tesla unveiled a redesigned Roadster developed with SpaceX and said production will begin in 2028, more than ten years after the car was first shown. The reveal happened on October 15, 2026, and it was far from a normal car launch.

In this guide, you will find the Tesla Roadster’s features, versions, price status, top speed claims, launch date and what Indian buyers should know before booking.

What Is the Tesla Roadster?

The Tesla Roadster is a high-performance electric sports car, and this second generation is a major redesign. The concept first appeared in 2017, when Tesla said deliveries would begin in 2020. That timeline slipped repeatedly and production is now planned for 2028.

The new car uses cold-gas thrusters built with SpaceX. These are not rocket engines that burn fuel. The system uses compressed air rather than combustion-based fuel.

7 Key Features of the Tesla Roadster

1. SpaceX Cold-Gas Thrusters

This is the headline feature. During the event, the white two-seater used built-in thrusters to turn in the air and land, and later jumped over a truck and other vehicles while twisting mid-air.

2. Extreme Acceleration Claims

Elon Musk said the Roadster can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than one second. Tesla’s listings show different figures for each version: the Performance model is listed at under 1.6 seconds, and the Thrust version at under one second. Electrek reported the invite-only Rocket at under 0.59 seconds.

These are company claims. Electrek considers the demonstrations real but the performance figures unverified.

3. Top Speed

Musk said the car can reach a top speed of over 230 mph (about 370 km/h). No independent test has confirmed this yet.

4. Suction System for Upside-Down Driving

Tesla showed the car driving upside down on a ramp using a suction system. Performance versions are described as having active aerodynamics and suction fans. It is impressive, but Tesla has not explained how much of this will reach regular road cars.

5. Three Versions

  • Performance: The base version. It is described as road-legal, with two seats and active aerodynamics.
  • Thrust: Adds rear acceleration thrusters and is planned in limited numbers.
  • Rocket: An invite-only, single-seat model with a “full flight system.” Tesla’s page says it is not approved for public road use.

6. All-Electric Powertrain

The Roadster is an electric car, so it delivers strong torque instantly. However, in the coverage I found, Tesla has not shared full battery capacity or certified range for this redesigned model.

7. Aerodynamic, Low-Slung Design

Tesla’s earlier teaser showed a large rear wing and full-width LED tail-lights. The overall look is built around aerodynamics and speed, though final production styling can still change.

Tesla Roadster Price

Tesla has not announced the final retail price. What exists today is the reservation deposit:

  • Performance: $50,000 deposit
  • Thrust: $250,000 deposit

A deposit is not the car’s price. It only holds your place in the queue. For comparison, in 2017 Tesla talked about a base price near $200,000, but that figure should not be treated as the price of this new model.

Tesla Roadster Price in India

Tesla has not announced Indian pricing, a local launch date or Indian reservations for the new Roadster, as far as I could confirm. If it is ever imported, the final cost would include customs duty, taxes, shipping and registration charges, so it would be much higher than the US figure. Please wait for an official Tesla India announcement.

Tesla Roadster Launch Date

The car was unveiled on October 15, 2026. Tesla says production will begin in 2028. That is a target, not a delivery guarantee. Delivery dates for individual buyers and countries have not been announced.

Tesla Roadster Range

Tesla’s original 2017 concept claimed a range of around 620 miles (about 998 km). That number belongs to the old concept and should not be assumed for the new car. Wait for official range figures and certified tests.

Should You Reserve a Tesla Roadster?

Reasons to be excited: unique thruster technology, record-level acceleration claims and a very limited, collectible product.

Reasons to be careful:

  • Production is two years away, and Tesla has delayed this car many times before.
  • The final price and specifications are not confirmed.
  • Some early 2017 reservation holders have still not received a car, and some publicly complained about difficulty getting deposits refunded.
  • Thrusters can add extra weight, energy use, maintenance and safety questions. Electrek argues that upward thrust gives no advantage while driving because it reduces tyre grip.

Read the refund terms carefully before paying any deposit.

Conclusion

The Tesla Roadster 2026 is one of the most ambitious electric cars announced so far, mixing sports-car design with SpaceX technology. But with production in 2028, no final price and unverified performance claims, it is wise to follow official updates before committing money.

1. What is the price of the Tesla Roadster?

The final price is not announced. Tesla’s reservation deposits are $50,000 for the Performance and $250,000 for the Thrust version.

2. When will the Tesla Roadster launch?

It was unveiled on October 15, 2026, and Tesla plans to start production in 2028.

3. What is the Tesla Roadster’s top speed?

Musk claims over 230 mph (around 370 km/h). This is not yet independently verified.
